The United States graphite electrode market is estimated at USD 530 million in 2026 (USD 511 million in 2025) and is projected to reach USD 763 million by 2036, registering a compound annual growth rate of approximately 3.7%. The US is the world’s largest electric-furnace steel market in the developed world, with roughly seven in every ten tonnes of domestic steel made in EAFs, and it imported 55,755 tonnes of electrodes in 2025, about 45% of its sales volume. Graphite electrode demand here therefore turns on two things at once: how much steel domestic mills melt, and who is allowed to supply the electrodes.
Steel demand is firm. AISI data show raw steel output of 62.8 million net tons through the end of August 2026, up 5.5% on a year earlier, with capability utilisation at 79.0% against 77.0%. Steel Dynamics reported record first-quarter shipments of 3.6 million tons, citing domestic trade actions, onshoring and infrastructure funding, and Nucor is ramping several new mills. Section 232 tariffs of 50% on steel imports have given mini-mills pricing power and a stronger case for new capacity, and that capacity is what generates demand for UHP electrodes.

The supply side is in flux. Domestic electrode production covers only about 55% of requirements (68,192 tonnes against 2025 sales volume of 123,947 tonnes), so the balance, 55,755 tonnes, is met from overseas, and the largest import sources are now under trade investigation. Final antidumping and countervailing duty decisions are scheduled for early December 2026, and the outcome will decide the cost, availability and source of electrodes for every US steelmaker for years. For C-suite buyers and suppliers alike, the sourcing decisions taken in the next two quarters may prove harder to reverse than any made since the last cycle of electrode shortages.

United States Graphite Electrode Market Growth Drivers
Tariff-protected steelmaking. Section 232 duties of 50% on steel have held since June 2025, and the April 2026 revision applies the tariff to the full customs value of covered products. With imports pushed back, domestic mills are running harder and earning higher spreads, which turns directly into electrode consumption per melt.
New mini-mill capacity. Nucor operates more than 26 EAF-based mills and is bringing on a roughly USD 4 billion sheet mill in West Virginia, planned to add about 3 million tonnes of capacity around the end of 2026, alongside projects in Arizona, North Carolina, Indiana and Alabama. Indicatively, every additional million tonnes of EAF output needs 1,500–2,000 tonnes of electrodes a year.
Onshoring and infrastructure demand. Long products such as structural steel and rail are in strong demand, according to Steel Dynamics, and data centre, power grid and manufacturing construction support long-product mills that rely on large-diameter UHP electrodes.
Iron units for electric furnaces. Nucor’s two DRI plants supply about 3.3 million tonnes of iron units, which reduces scrap dependence for premium grades and lengthens melt times, supporting electrode use per tonne of high-quality steel.
Restocking behind trade protection. Buyers who ran down electrode inventories during years of low prices are now building cover as duties approach, and that front-loading is lifting near-term order volumes.
Higher-grade product mix. Specialty bar, rail, plate and sheet from newer EAFs require high-quality melting, moving the mix towards larger diameters and super high power grades.

Policy, Trade and Cost Factors Shaping the United States Graphite Electrode Industry
Antidumping and countervailing duty cases. Resonac Graphite America of Ridgeville, South Carolina and Tokai Carbon GE of Charlotte, North Carolina filed their petition on 24 February 2026, covering electrodes above 425 mm in diameter and their joining pins. The petition alleged dumping margins of up to about 147% for China and 74% for India. Preliminary subsidy rates run from low single digits for Indian producers to more than 100% for non-cooperating Chinese ones, and final determinations are aligned for early December 2026, with the ITC injury vote following in early 2027.
Critical circumstances. Commerce has preliminarily found that critical circumstances exist for Chinese and Indian electrodes after petitioners pointed to a surge in Chinese shipments in early 2026, up 105% between the two comparison periods they presented. If confirmed, duties could reach entries made up to 90 days before the preliminary decisions, which exposes importers who front-loaded shipments.
Import dependence. USGS data show India and Mexico were the two largest sources by volume in 2023, at 29,100 and 13,900 tonnes. Commerce’s data on the main reporting number for the subject goods show volumes from China and India falling in 2025 before the case, so supply has been shifting even ahead of any order.
Needle coke security. US electrode production depends on petroleum needle coke, which competes with battery anode uses. GrafTech’s Seadrift plant in Texas gives it a rare domestic coke source, a feature that matters more as defence and battery programmes seek domestic graphite.
Power costs and plant economics. Graphitisation is power-intensive, so any restart of domestic capacity must be set against regional electricity prices and a skilled-labour shortage.

Key United States Graphite Electrode Market Trends and Insights
Trade policy is now the biggest source of price risk
Steel input costs are shaped by a legal calendar as much as by commodity markets. Preliminary rates, critical circumstances findings and the final vote each reset landed costs, and buyers who plan on a single scenario risk repricing mid-contract.
Domestic capacity restarts are the strategic wild card
GrafTech’s St. Marys, Pennsylvania plant has been idled for electrode production since 2024 and now serves mainly as a machining and distribution centre, with the company eyeing battery and energy storage uses. Whether duties are strong enough to justify restarting electrode lines in the US will shape supply security after 2028, and it is a question investors and buyers should watch closely.
Electrode price premium in the US
The US pays more per tonne than other regions, so exporters weigh the cost of duties against the premium. A narrower gap between US and global prices would reduce the incentive to ship, while a wider gap could draw non-subject suppliers.
Non-subject suppliers are the next battleground
Duties on China and India leave Europe, Japan, Mexico and other origins as likely beneficiaries, and the sourcing map of 2027 may look quite different from today’s. Qualification takes time: steelmakers cannot switch electrode suppliers overnight without testing consumption, breakage and joint performance.
Mills are adopting longer supply commitments
Facing duty uncertainty, large steelmakers are looking at multi-year agreements with price adjustment clauses, tolling, and consignment stock to protect operations. This favours suppliers that offer secure supply and local inventory over those competing on price alone.

United States Graphite Electrode Market Segment-wise Analysis
By Grade and Diameter
UHP and SHP electrodes in diameters of 600 mm and above dominate US purchasing because the biggest mini-mills run high-power furnaces. This band falls entirely inside the scope of the trade cases and is where duty exposure is highest. Smaller diameters serve ladle furnaces and small mills and are covered by a separate existing order on Chinese small-diameter electrodes.
By Application
Scrap-based EAF melting for long and flat products is the core of demand. DRI-fed EAFs, mostly in the Gulf Coast and Southeast, use electrodes at a higher rate per tonne. Ladle metallurgy in integrated mills adds a second stream, while specialty steel melting requires strict quality approvals.
By Sales Channel and Origin
Large steel groups purchase through annual contracts and supply agreements, mid-size mills through distributors and traders, and a share of demand is met through spot buying. Origin is a procurement criterion in its own right, with buyers assessing duty exposure by country and by producer.
By Region
Demand is greatest in the Midwest and Great Lakes states, the Southeast, Texas and the Gulf Coast, where large mini-mills sit close to scrap. The Mid-Atlantic and Appalachia gain from West Virginia and nearby new capacity, while Arizona and the West serve western construction and rebar demand. Port of entry and inland freight can add noticeably to delivered cost.

United States Graphite Electrode Market Competitive Landscape
Supply is split between a small group of US-based producers and a larger group of importers. GrafTech controls a unique position through its Seadrift needle coke operation, while Resonac Graphite America and Tokai Carbon GE, the petitioners, anchor Japanese-owned capacity in the Carolinas and are the main advocates of trade remedies. Their strategy is to restore pricing and utilisation in their home market.
Overseas suppliers compete on price, grade range and delivery reliability. Indian producers HEG and Graphite India carry lower preliminary duties than their Chinese rivals and may hold or gain share if final rates stay low, while Chinese exporters face a much harsher outlook and may redirect volume to other markets.
Over the forecast period, share is likely to go to suppliers with duty-secure origins, locally held inventory and the technical capability to meet the qualification demands of large mini-mills. Buyers such as Nucor, Steel Dynamics and Cleveland-Cliffs hold the ability to shape the market through the contracts they sign in the next year.
