The Egypt graphite electrode market is estimated at USD 60 million in 2026 (USD 58 million in 2025) and is forecast to reach USD 89 million by 2036, a compound annual growth rate of approximately 4.0%. Egypt is an unusual case among large steel producers because every tonne of its crude steel, 10.6 million tonnes in 2025, is made in an electric arc furnace. There is no blast furnace route to compete with, so graphite electrode demand is tied directly to the output of the country’s DRI-based and scrap-based melt shops.
The industry is concentrated around a few large, vertically integrated groups, led by Ezz Steel, which is the largest steel producer in the MENA region, alongside Suez Steel, Beshay Steel, El Marakby Steel and a long tail of smaller rolling mills. Most mills charge direct reduced iron made with Egyptian natural gas, while a few rely on scrap. Electrodes are imported and paid for in hard currency, which makes exchange rates, energy tariffs and global electrode pricing the three variables that most affect Egyptian buyers.
The coming decade will test how well Egyptian mills adapt to a more expensive energy regime, a harder export environment and rising carbon requirements in destination markets. Producers that improve furnace efficiency, move up the product ladder and secure dependable electrode supply will define who grows demand through 2036.

Egypt Graphite Electrode Market Growth Drivers to 2036
A fully electric steel industry.
With no blast furnace capacity, any growth in Egyptian steel output translates directly into more electrode consumption. This gives the market a cleaner link between steel production and electrode demand than in most countries.
Large domestic construction demand. Housing, new urban developments, infrastructure and utility projects keep rebar and wire rod in steady demand. Domestic consumption is the foundation of the industry and supports furnace utilisation even when exports fall.
Gas-based DRI capacity. Egypt has built several million tonnes of DRI capacity, giving mills access to high-quality iron units that make arc furnace operation more stable. Suez Steel, for example, modernised its 1.95 million tonne DRI module between 2021 and 2025, cutting specific gas use and electricity consumption.
Furnace efficiency programmes. Hot DRI charging and digital monitoring of arc furnaces are reducing energy intensity by 15–20% at leading plants. More efficient melting changes how electrodes are used, favouring suppliers with premium grades that support stable arcs and lower breakage.
Protection and localisation. Tariffs, anti-dumping duties and local-content rules in public procurement keep Chinese and other low-priced steel at bay and channel orders to domestic mills, including those of Ezz Steel and Kandil Steel in flat steel.
Expansion into flat steel. Ezz Steel plans to enter sheet steel for profiled sheets and sandwich panels by 2027, a move that diversifies away from rebar and calls for higher process control and more consistent electrode quality.

Industry Disruptions Reshaping Graphite Electrode Supply and Trade in Egypt
A reset in energy costs. In 2026 the government raised electricity and gas tariffs for industry by between 20% and 91%, depending on the consumer category. Steelmakers now pay roughly USD 40–50 per MWh for power, and gas prices for iron and steel were increased to USD 7.75 per million BTU in May. Higher energy costs squeeze margins and make electrode efficiency a central focus.
Export setbacks. Egyptian steel exports fell by about 30–35% year on year in the first half of 2026, to roughly USD 600–650 million, after peaking in value in 2024. The United States has also imposed definitive anti-dumping orders on Egyptian rebar, with a margin of 34.20% for Ezz Steel and 52.73% for El Marakby and Suez Steel. Weaker exports reduce furnace loading and electrode orders.
Currency and import financing. Electrodes are bought in dollars, so any weakness in the Egyptian pound raises their local cost. Mills must manage hedging, working capital and supplier credit carefully, and some will buy smaller lots more often rather than commit to large annual volumes.
Electrode price increases. Suppliers have raised prices in 2026 in response to needle coke costs and capacity closures. Egyptian mills, which operate on thinner margins than many of their peers, are especially sensitive to such increases.
Freight and regional instability. Conflict in the wider Middle East has disrupted shipping and raised freight risk, extending lead times and insurance costs on deliveries into the region.
Egypt’s mills face rising costs and lower export revenue at the same time, which explains why supply reliability and electrode efficiency have become more important than price alone.

Future Disruption Possibilities
The following developments could move Egyptian demand away from the base case:
•    Further adjustments to industrial power and gas tariffs, up or down, that change the cost of running arc furnaces.
•    Additional foreign trade remedies against Egyptian steel products that cut export volumes further.
•    Stronger domestic protection or procurement rules that raise local mills’ share of Egyptian demand.
•    Delays or acceleration of flat steel investments that increase high-grade electrode requirements.
•    Carbon border costs for steel entering the EU, pushing mills to invest in lower-emission melting and monitoring.
•    Needle coke shortages that raise the cost of UHP electrodes just as new capacity comes on stream.

Key Egypt Graphite Electrode Market Trends and Insights
Seven themes describe how Egyptian steelmakers and their suppliers are adapting to a tougher operating climate.
Energy repricing is turning efficiency into a competitive weapon
As power and gas become more expensive, every kilowatt-hour saved in the furnace has a clear financial value. Mills are focusing on power-on time, tap-to-tap performance and electrode consumption per tonne, and buyers who can show lower specific consumption are winning in cost terms.
DRI-fed melting shapes electrode demand
Furnaces charged with DRI run differently from scrap-based units, with continuous feeding and different slag behaviour. Electrode suppliers need grades and technical support tuned to these practices, which favours those with experience in gas-based iron regions.
The export mix is moving from rebar to flat and semi-finished products
Ezz Steel has been exporting more hot-rolled coil and less rebar, which lifts value per tonne and calls for tighter product quality. Higher-value products place greater demands on furnace consistency and therefore on electrode performance.
Trade remedies now influence furnace loading
Duties abroad and protection at home mean that production plans are being rebalanced between domestic and export markets. Electrode procurement increasingly follows the monthly order book rather than long-term forecasts.
Localisation policy supports domestic mills
Government rules that favour Egyptian-made steel in public projects stabilise demand for the biggest producers. This gives them confidence to invest in equipment and secure supply agreements with electrode manufacturers.
Carbon rules abroad are reaching Egyptian plants
Exports to Europe are exposed to carbon border adjustments, so mills are measuring emissions and upgrading efficiency. Electric melting powered by gas-based DRI already has a comparatively favourable profile, and improving it further requires well-managed furnaces and reliable consumables.
Procurement is shifting towards smaller, more frequent orders
With currency volatility and tighter working capital, many buyers prefer to place smaller orders more often. Suppliers that hold regional stock and offer flexible terms will gain from this trend.

Egypt Graphite Electrode Market Segment-wise Analysis
By Product

HP and SHP electrodes account for the largest share of current consumption, matching the mix of mid-sized furnaces serving rebar and wire rod. UHP is the growth grade as new and upgraded furnaces, especially in flat steel, run at higher power. RP electrodes remain in use in smaller melt shops where price dominates.
Medium and large diameters account for most volume at integrated groups, while smaller diameters serve independent rolling mills with compact furnaces. Nipples are bought together with electrodes, and mills with continuous operation are particularly sensitive to joint quality, since a breakage interrupts an entire heat.
By Application
DRI-fed arc furnaces are the largest application and the most distinctive feature of the Egyptian market. Scrap-based furnaces form a second segment and are more exposed to the cost and quality of imported scrap. Ladle furnaces and refining add steady demand, while flat and special steel production is the main emerging use.
By Buyer and Channel
Large integrated groups account for most volume and buy through annual agreements negotiated with major international suppliers. Independent mills and smaller producers buy through traders and importers and often purchase in smaller, more frequent lots.

Egypt Graphite Electrode Market Regional Outlook
Electrode demand in Egypt follows the location of the country’s steel complexes, which are clustered in a few industrial zones with port access.
Greater Cairo and the Nile Delta
This is the traditional heart of Egyptian rolling and melting, with many mid-sized and smaller mills including Beshay Steel and El Marakby Steel. Competition is intense and the buying pattern is price-sensitive, with trader supply playing a larger role than elsewhere.
Alexandria and the North Coast
Alexandria hosts Ezz Steel’s Dekheila operations and benefits from Mediterranean port access for both electrode imports and steel exports. The area is a centre of integrated production and a main base for large contract buyers.
Suez Canal Zone and Ain Sokhna
The Gulf of Suez coast is the growth area, home to Suez Steel, Ezz’s flat steel complex at Ain Sokhna and DRI plants in the region. Proximity to the canal and to Red Sea shipping makes it the preferred base for export-oriented plants and for any future flat steel expansion.
Rest of Egypt
Upper Egypt and other governorates host smaller mills and potential new investments, supported by construction demand. Volumes are modest and supply is mostly handled through regional distributors.

Competitive Landscape and Market Share Analysis for Egypt
Egyptian mills buy electrodes from international producers, and cost-competitive suppliers from India and China are a natural fit for price-sensitive buyers. At the top end, large groups that run high-power furnaces also qualify premium suppliers to protect uptime and reduce consumption per tonne.
HEG and Graphite India serve the region with a broad range from HP to UHP and competitive delivery from Indian ports. GrafTech, Resonac and Tokai Carbon compete at the premium end, where furnace performance and technical support matter more than headline price.
Chinese producers including Fangda Carbon, Jilin Carbon, Kaifeng Carbon and Fushun Carbon are major suppliers of standard grades, and their market position will depend on how much volume they redirect from restricted markets in North America and Asia.
By 2036, advantage will go to suppliers that combine regional warehousing, flexible payment terms, process-focused technical support and reliable needle coke access. Egyptian buyers that qualify multiple suppliers will be better protected against freight disruption, currency swings and price spikes.
